Latest Social Network Convo EVER: An Analysis [Ft. omAcronAlpha(Kevin) and VisceralMoue(Grace)] KEVIN: Andrew Garfield's voice in this movie sounds like live-action fanfic erotica. It's so raspy and sensual. The whole time. Except for the climax (don't even PARDON the pun...)
GRACE: HAHAHAHA you're great. You do have a thing for fanfic erotica analogies though. It really is spectacular. Some peoples' voices change so much accent to accent.
KEVIN: I think the whole homoeroticism you're finding is magnified by the fact that Garfield is having wordsex with you, me, Zuckerberg, and everybody listening.
GRACE: That's true. It also has to do with how he oriented his whole character around LOVING ZUCKERBERG.
KEVIN: Well, there's that too. Well, technically, the validity of that notion is being called to question, but for now we agree, loosely, that you're right.
GRACE: Good. And i don't call it homoeroticism. My slash goggles are off. It's just that their relationship, whatever it be, is the focus of the movie, and it's intense.
KEVIN: I paraphrased, but I assumed you were entertaining the message passed with 'homoeroticism'. Did you start watching again? Because if you didn't, We're probably about 30 minutes apart.
GRACE: I did but i'm taking breaks still. I don't think homoeroticism is inseparable from this, but there IS the bathroom scene. The look on garfield's face.
KEVIN: I think you're brainwashing me on this one, but: It seems like Garfield *talks* to other people, but gives a specifically sultry whisper to Eisenberg. Always.
GRACE: REALLY? THANK YOU FOR NOTICING SHIT LIKE THIS EVEN MORE THAN ME. In one interview with the main cast and the writer, the interviewer was all "i sympathized most with Eduardo!" and ALL OF THEM were like "nope, i sympathized with Mark" and i was like FUCK YOU MARK'S A BITCH. And RIGHT after talking about sex and mark shutting him down with "meeting a GIRL" wow, what cojones
KEVIN: Awwwwwwwwwwww, he's trying SO hard to impress Zuck when he made second cut, and it's just NOT going over. Go to 36:45 and watch how he smirks crookedly and leans into Mark hypersexually.
GRACE: You are my favorite friend right now
KEVIN: I have a theory on this Garfield:Eisenberg::Eduardo:Mark thing; I think this homoeroticism(calling it) isn't a facade, and Garfield and Eisenberg, being the fantastic actors they are, channeled their characters absolutely, and fully portrayed the true homoeroticism of the script. There has to be a reason why staight Andrew is playing 'straight' Eduardo, and moving in so hard on straight Jesse, playing straight Zuckerberg.
GRACE: That is exactly what i think. With a side order of Garfield is in love with Eisenberg because i have seen multiple interviews of him saying so. But they are FANTASTIC actors. Also, woohoo, official homoeroticism!
KEVIN: We need to campaign and expose the subliminal homosexual undertones of this movie. OhwowdidimentionIjoinedwestborocatholicchurchWHAT I MEANT was, not speak out against the gay undertones, but just make it known.
GRACE: Okay, it's like the actors slipped entirely into well-formed characters that don't fit with the script. The script has them say and do the wrong things. That's the diagnosis I was looking for.
KEVIN: Theory: Mark, polarized by his break up with Erica, forms a homoerotic with Sean Parker to feel a sort of emotional acceptance. He couldn't offer his emotions to Eduardo, because Eduardo would be reciprocating to the vies so much that it would be genuinely homosexual, which mark and Eduardo are 'not.' So, Sean Parker validates Zuck, while being sexually cold enough that it doesn't become passionate.
GRACE: That is not my favorite theory.
KEVIN: I like the theory. It clarifies a lot. And it opens the gate for Zuck's emotional feedback, that otherwise would have been totally detached.
GRACE: He never has emotional feedback. But i'll consider your theory even though you are venturing near high school english teahcer levels of over analyzing and making stuff up.
KEVIN: Finish the movie. You'll see. Just trust me on this one. If I find out that I'm wrong, I'll rescind, but... really.
GRACE: I don't think Eisenberg's performance informs this at all. I think he went to Parker for other reasons. And i still don't know why he betrayed Eduardo.
KEVIN: And, subliminal erotica aside, you CAN'T tell me that mark doesn't start to open up and liven DRASTICALLY when Sean started to cosign Mark when Eduardo wouldn't. And that's blatantly expressed in the script.
GRACE: Okay, true. But it was for creative reasons. He was attracted to Sean's flamboyant and inspired business tactics. Facebook was always his top priority. BUT i have this thing i noticed about Mark's character that i'm surprised no one talked about. When something goes wrong for him, when an emotional relationship takes a bad turn, his first instinct is to make a site or expand and improve the one he has, obsessively. Maybe he latched onto Sean's expansion techniques BECAUSE he and Eduardo were fighting. It's all focused on Wardo.
KEVIN: Just notice this: Eduardo was cosigning Mark's every, admittedly great, move for the beginning of the movie. BUT, when Mark tries and fails to make amends with his girlfriend, Eduardo, coincidentally-to-fiction-life(probably intentionally within the script) starts to get a lot more critical to Mark's every move. Since that moment, the first and only person really supporting him was Sean. And yeah, Facebook is the first priority for all three of them. Their intense involvement in Facebook makes the Facebook-to-romance allegory possible.
GRACE: I DO NOT KNOW WHAT YOU ARE SAYING. Text isn't best for this conversation. Let's write manifestos on tumblr.
KEVIN: We already said the important things. I am going to copy and paste the conversation to Tumblr, though. Which I can do. Because I have a smartphone.
GRACE: Damn you. Damn you to hell. (include this)
